Beckett & Raeder, Inc. was engaged by Eastern Michigan University to provide landscape architectural and civil engineering services for an addition to and renovation of the Mark Jefferson Science Building. The project was an expansion and complete renovation of EMU’s science classroom and laboratory facilities. Site design addressed pre-existing flooding occurrences by implementing an extensive underground storm water detention and by-pass system. Run-off was also reduced through use of a green roof system.

In addition to renovating and expanding the science building complex, the project also constructed native landscapes and green roofs to serve as outdoor laboratories.  Design and detailing of outdoor spaces and systems was specifically integrated with academic program curriculum. Services provided include planning, civil engineering and landscape architectural design, city site plan review, public engagement, civil design of utilities and stormwater management, soil erosion and sedimentation control plans, hardscape and landscape design and engineering, green roof design, LEED documentation, and construction administration.
