In 2021, Beckett & Raeder Inc. began the process of updating the Torch Lake Township Zoning Ordinance, which had been effective since August 1983. Over time, the 1983 zoning ordinance had been added to, amended, and revised to keep up with the changing needs and preferences of the community. Although these edits may have proved necessary, they resulted in an overly complex document that was not easy to refer to or use. As such, it was evident that an update to the zoning ordinance would be beneficial.
In rewriting the zoning ordinance, Beckett & Raeder prioritized a user-friendly approach. Where possible, information was streamlined and consolidated. Graphics and other drawings were incorporated throughout the document to present information visually. Lot requirements for each zoning district were displayed in tables as well to facilitate easy interpretation of regulations and standards. The overarching aim was to promote the zoning ordinance as an easy-to use document for all community members.
In general, updates to the zoning ordinance were drafted thoughtfully to remain compliant with current laws and case law. Additionally, to further protect the natural landscape of the community, shoreline planting regulations were added as a new policy. The updated zoning ordinance was adopted in September 2024 and has since proven successful at guiding development and serving as a reference tool for community residents and members.
