East Jordan is located in the northwest corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula in Charlevoix County. Situated at the southern end of Lake Charlevoix’s south arm and the mouth of the Jordan River, East Jordan experiences an influx of seasonal visitors.
The City of East Jordan revises its Parks and Recreation Master Plan every five years to update the assessment of its recreation inventory and to re-prioritize recreation projects based on need and public input. Community engagement provided critical information during this process as various stakeholder groups, city residents, and users of parks and recreational facilities shared insights and their preferences about the future of the parks system through a community open house and a survey. While feedback about the park system was mainly positive, residents expressed a preference for more nonmotorized paths for hiking and bicycling, and indoor facilities for the winter.
To help with the implementation section, the survey not only asked what they wanted to see, but specifically at which park. That way, the strategies could be pulled directly from the residents' input as a priority and paired with its feasibility over the next five years. The actions are then organized by year, park, and which of the four goals they help to achieve. Because of staff's limited capacity and budget, many of the strategies call for partnerships with the region and state to realize larger goals.
