Smart Growth Readiness Assessment Tool
Now Available!

The Smart Growth Readiness Assessment Tool (SGRAT) was developed by the Land Policy Institute in conjunction with the Planning and Zoning Center at Michigan State University and the Michigan State University Citizen Planner Program.

The program takes an in-depth look into current policy and planning practices of your community and provides a comprehensive assessment of your community's progress toward implementing Smart Growth practices. The program is designed around the 10 Tenants of Smart Growth that were developed by the Smart Growth Network (SGN) in partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The SGRAT program will provide your community with a powerful tool that will assess your community's progress toward Smart Growth. By completing a Smart Growth assessment, you will establish a set of milestones for future improvement, which help identify resources needed to implement Smart Growth measures and techniques.

This program will help your community to benchmark your current success and monitor progress to achieve future objectives. This is a local community process coordinated by a consulant. A ten-person committee comprised of members of the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Administration, Elected Officials, and Community Stakeholders assist with the assessment.

The budget for a Smart Growth Readiness Assessment is under $6,000. Beckett & Raeder, Inc. is one of the few approved facilitators for this program.
