Onekama Community Parks

The Onekama Community Parks project is the result of a $34,000 grant from the Michigan Coastal Management Program to the Alliance for Economic Success (AES).  The project has been identified as a high priority in the Portage Lake Forever Watershed Plan and the Onekama Community Master Plan.  It will set the stage for the Onekama community to seek grants from sources such as the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for developing facilities, trails, exhibits and signage, landscaping and other potential priorities that will be defined for the network of access sites and parks that ring Portage Lake.

This project will include an assessment of each Village and Township park facility; identification and priorities for type and level of improvements; public engagement; preparation of a capital budget; and phasing program.  The public will be given an opportunity to review and comment on proposed conceptual plans for parks selected by the Onekama Parks Leadership Team prior to the preparation of finalized schematic plans.  Each park will be evaluated and planned improvements will incorporate “universal” design principles; integration of natural and cultural features; and best practices for long-term maintenance and operations.
